St John’s Kids, 07 March 2021

Sunday 7 March

This week we continue our talk series, looking at the book of Jeremiah.

You can continue to access our digital services here and/or attend in-person at 10am or 5pm.

The people of Judah had put their trust in the temple and the associated sacrifices and rituals. But outside of that system, they were overtly disobeying God in other areas of their lives.

Are we sometimes guilty of attending church ‘religiously’ on Sundays and forgetting that a relationship with God involves communicating with him and serving him every day? And, as parents, are we teaching our kids that God-stuff is just for Sundays, or something that is fundamental to everyday life?

This passage poses a challenge to us, just as it did to the people of Jerusalem – we are not living the way God intended if we simply attend to some rituals and close our hearts to God and the needs of those around us.

Widows and orphans might not specifically stand out to us as needing assistance in our culture, but there are always people in need. Ask your kids who some of the people in need might be – the child being picked on or left out at school, the homeless, refugees, the lonely, those suffering financial difficulties due to job loss, a family who have just had a baby, someone who is ill or recovering from surgery. Talk about how God wants us to respond, as followers of Jesus. Plan, as a family, to assist someone together this week. Pray together, asking God to help you turn away from things that turn your focus from him, ask him to strengthen your trust in Jesus, and ask him to empower you to do the thing(s) you have committed to as a family as a response to today’s message.

Lent

Lent is the six-week period leading up to Easter. It started on Ash Wednesday (17 Feb this year). It is a time of reflection and preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

If you missed the post about activities families might like to engage in during this period, head here.

Church Picnic
