Partners in the Gospel – Nungalinya College

In Philippians 1:4-5 the Apostle Paul writes that he always prays with joy because of the Philippian church’s “partnership in the gospel”. Through their prayers, encouragement and financial support they show that they are working alongside Paul in his mission of sharing the good news of Jesus and strengthening churches to love and serve Jesus.

At St John’s we rejoice in being gospel partners too, working alongside a variety of organisations to share the good news of Jesus and help people in his name. One of our partners is Nungalinya College in Darwin. Nungalinya is a Combined Churches Training College for Indigenous Australians. They offer a variety of courses:

Literacy and numeracy Courses: assisting Indigenous people in their life situation and in their understanding of the Bible. This course provides a foundation for students to go on to other courses at Nungalinya or at other colleges.

Theology Courses: addressing the unique nature of Aboriginality and Christianity. They are designed to develop personal faith and equip people for practical Christian ministry.

Music and Media Courses: teaching practical skills in recording and performance while developing discipleship and creativity for church communities.

Nungalinya is vital for equipping indigenous churches and church leaders to minister in the Northern Territory and beyond. Our CMS link missionaries Tavis and Kate Beer work in close partnership with Nungalinya in their own role. Two of our young adults Andrew Simpson and Katherine Shields have just visited Nungalinya College so why not ask them more about it, or check out the missions board in the foyer at St John’s which is focused on Nungalinya this month.

Here are some prayer points for help you in your partnership in the gospel with Nungalinya College:

  • Pray for Dr Jude Long, the Principal of Nungalinya, as she leads the staff team.
  • Pray for the many new students coming to College this term that they will be encouraged in their faith.
  • Pray for the process of finalising building plans for a new unit and choosing an appropriate builder.
  • Pray for better funding and educational programs for Indigenous schooling both remote and through boarding schools.
