St John’s Kids, 14 March 2021

Sunday 14 March

You can continue to access our digital services here and/or attend in-person at 10am or 5pm.

This week we continue our current talk series. Read Jeremiah 15:10-21 in preparation.

Jeremiah is feeling very sorry for himself in this passage – to the point of wishing he had never been born. He feels as though he has done what God asked of him, but that his message has been rejected and the people curse him for it. He feels let down by God.

Ask your kids if they have ever felt let down by God. Maybe they have prayed for something and felt like God has not answered them. Maybe they feel that God is not protecting them. Little disappointments can become big problems if they are not talked about.

Explain that when we feel let down by God, it is because our expectations do not line up with God’s plan or timing, not because God has forgotten us.

Encourage your kids to talk to you about their disappointments and to talk to God, even when it is God they are disappointed in. Disappointment often leaves us thinking ‘poor me’, just as it did with Jeremiah, and if we stay in that state too long, we can lose sight of where our hope lies. If we take our worries and concerns to God, he will teach us, strengthen us for his purpose and renew our hope, as he did with Jeremiah.

Model disappointment to your kids. As parents, we hide a lot of our fears and disappointments from our kids. But talking, in age-appropriate ways, about our feelings and modelling a biblical response to them, will enable our kids to develop that skill and reliance on God themselves.

Pray. Talking about deep feelings should always be followed up with prayer. Prayer is powerful. Our kids need to know that prayer is not a sign of weakness, but a step of faith.

Lent

Lent is the six-week period leading up to Easter. It started on Ash Wednesday (17 Feb this year). It is a time of reflection and preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

If you missed the earlier post about activities families might like to engage in during this period, head here.
