St John’s Kids – 03 January 2021

Happy New Year everyone!

2020 was full of unforeseen challenges and tough times for many. It’s quite natural to be relieved that the year is behind us and a brand new, fresh start, lies before us. I pray that as we transition into the new year, we don’t automatically reset to the pre-COVID busyness, but that we can reassess our activities and embrace the lessons that we’ve learnt from lockdown. I doubt anyone wants to return to the remote working/schooling juggle that so many young families struggled with, but some of 2020 was good – simplifying extracurricular activities and more quality time with immediate family.

Above all, whatever the new year holds, God is our constant – he was the same yesterday, as he is today and will be tomorrow.

God wants us to know him and to be in relationship with him. This year, as part of your new normal, strive to make God your family’s top priority. Discuss what needs to happen to focus on him more this year as a family. (Some ideas were in last week’s post.)

Sunday 3 January:

Access our streamed services here.

Tim will be bringing us our talk this week. To prepare yourselves, read Mark 8:1-21.

Activities, should you need them, to keep hands busy during the talk:

Extra activity for older kids – Compare the accounts of Jesus feeding the 4000 and the 5000. What is the same about these two miracles? What is different? You might like to use this diagram to illustrate your findings. Some things you might like to think about:

  • Location
  • The time of day
  • What did Jesus say
  • How did Jesus feel
  • What food did they start with and how much was left over
  • How did the stories end

Feeding of the 4000 passages: Matt 15:29-39, Mark 8:1-9

Feeding of the 5000 passages: Matt 14:13-23, Mark 6:34-45, Luke 9:10-17, John 6:1-13

Upcoming event:

In preparation for our return to in-person services, we are holding two Working Bees and would love you to lend a hand to get the church back into shape. On Friday 8 January, we will be re-setting the Worship Centre (including the pews and some of the tech equipment), doing some gardening, and some other large jobs. On Saturday 9 January, we will reset the stage and music equipment, and clean the whole building from top to toe!

For COVID-Safe reasons, you need to register to participate. If you have issues with the process, call the office once we reopen on Monday 4 January.

Have a great week!

Kylie – Children & Families’ Minister
